About the Canterbury Caledonian Society |

LocationThe Canterbury Caledonian Society home is the Caledonian Hall, located at 135 Kilmore Street. The location is in the heart of the city, making it ideally situated for numerous activities. The interior has a wide and lofty entrance, main hall and stage, and is capable of seating 800 people. Across the Kilmore Street end of the hall is an upstairs gallery that seats another 100 people. The Balmoral room is situated at the northern end of the hall and is of a size ideal for use as a supper room, or for functions not requiring the expanse of the main hall. Full kitchen facilities are attached to this room. The main hall and Balmoral Room are available for hire to the public and commercial organisations.

The Society was established in 1882 by enthusiastic Scottish migrants who feared a decline in the recognition of their heritage unless something was done to preserve it Since that time the Society has made a very significant contribution to the fabric of our local community and has gained the respect of Scottish organisations throughout New Zealand. In 1994 the Directors of the Society took steps to ensure the future of our major asset the Caledonian Hall which has been described as The home of the Caledonian Society, ~ substantial and very central hall, which suits the many activity groups associated with the Society The location and magnitude of the building Itself bears tribute to the efforts and sincerity of the early fathers of the Christchurch Scottish community. The Caledonian Hall is listed as a Class 2 building by the Historic Places Trust and is the last dance hall of it’s kind there is no comparable building like it in the city.
Today the Canterbury Caledonian Society with over 400 members seeks to be a modern viable organisation in the city promoting and maintaining our Scottish heritage There are two award winning Pipe Bands - Caledonian Pipe Band. a Grade One band and The Royal Stewart Pipe Band. a Grade Three band, an enthusiastic learners Pipe Band. a successful Highland Dancing group and a keen Scottish Dancing learners group.
In addition to our own membership, Pipe Bands and dancers, the Caledonian Hall is used by many kindred groups such as the Piping and Dancing Association and the Canterbury Scottish Heritage Council. The building is the meeting place for the many committees and sub-committees who meet in support of their own activities as well as other Scottish heritage groups.
The hall is also used for other community events when available.
The Rules of the Canterbury Caledonian Society (Inc) set out the objects - ". . .the promotion of social activities, benevolence educator, and interest in Scottish national literature music, customs, arts and accomplishments . . ."
With respect for the past and determination to be foremost in the promotion and preservation of our heritage the Canterbury Caledonian Society continues to fulfil the objectives of the early fathers of the Christchurch Scottish community who undertook the preservation of their heritrage
