Mission StatementTo collect together the archives, relics, pictures and books held by or donated to the Canterbury Caledonian Society, and to ensure that they are properly recorded, adequately housed, securely preserved and where possible displayed to all interested in the first 100 years of the Society and the Scottish heritage of Christchurch.
The Caledonian Collection The Caledonian Collection is a Memorial to the Scottish settlers of the past century and a tribute to the life and work of past members of the Canterbury Caledonian Society.
This compilation of artefacts, books and paintings is unique and important as a resource for serious student research. It is a fascinating and informative record of those who brought their Scottish traditions with them to New Zealand.
The collection is an opportunity to tell the story of our Scottish heritage to another generation. It is where we can tell our own story - the story of those who came from Scotland to the other side of the world to find a happier way of living. The story of the Caledonian Society since 1882 and the treasures the early Scottish settlers brought with them, are now the heritage of their descendants and are an important part of the Caledonian Collection.
Celebrating SuccessThe 1932 Jubilee booklet and the 1982 Centennial booklet under the headings "The Society's Treasures" lists some items held. The 1787 letter of Robert Burns, a letter of James Hogg. and the 1891 rams head snuff mull as well as a select library of old and curious books, In the 1980s the snuff mull, now known as "Herbie", was rescued from oblivion and re-housed, the parlour clock was restored to it’s former glory. However with the passing years and other demands those in charge of the Society's affairs were not able to give much consideration to other items held, their storage or condition.
In 1994 it was possible to review and list the articles held, professional advice was received and immediate action taken to ensure the preservation and storage of what is now called "The Caledonian Collection".
In 1995 financial assistance was received from the Lottery Grants Board to enable to Society to build secure, dust free storage for the items held together with a suitable display area.
The Caledonian Collection policy statement and guidelines have been formulated and approved by the Directors. All holdings are now recorded and an acknowledgement is given for all items received.
